Equity Meets Opportunity

I stand for equitable and innovative approaches to learning that are student-centered. As your new Board Member, I will listen to community concerns and govern with the following priorities:

COVID-19 Response

As a physician in the pediatric emergency department, I treat children with COVID-19 every single shift. I have seen directly the profound effect that this virus has had on our community. As well, I have served on multiple employee engagement and COVID-19 mitigation committees over the past year. I am passionate about the safety of our students, teachers and staff. As your school board member, I will advocate for:

  • Keeping our schools open to the greatest extent possible

  • Following and interpreting school-based COVID guidance as published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the World Health
Organization (WHO), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

  • Following the mitigation strategies of our Superintendent and being a voice for safety

  • Listening to parents' feedback and individual concerns

Fiscal Responsibility

Our community has seen a steady increase in property taxes and home prices. These trends make our community unaffordable and inaccessible. Steps to make this better for everyone include:

  • Detailed and open conversations about the budget, fiscal adjustments, and revenue increases

  • Maintain collaborative relationships with our city commissioners, focusing on keeping the school system budget up to date and competitive with other top districts

  • Frequent evaluations of spending to keep expenses in line with our values and ensure appropriate allocation of funds

Focused Education for All Student Populations

Students within the City Schools of Decatur (CSD) have a variety of educational needs.  One size does not fit all.  It is critical that students with unique educational needs are supported and nurtured.  My plan for advocating for our most vulnerable children includes:

  • Teacher training to facilitate early identification and intervention for learners with specialized needs

  • Oversight into attrition rates from CSD, and dedication of line-item resources and funds help keep students in the District

  • Detailed learning plans for teachers and families

  • Learning resources both inside and outside of the classroom, especially at the Kindergarten to 2nd grade level

  • Working with administration and families to get the best outcomes for CSD students

  • Targeted and clear strategies for students with individualized educational plans (IEPs) and 504 plans, including emphasis on frequent plan updates and parent/staff meetings

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Equity should be at the forefront of our decisions as a school system, and as community leaders.  All children in our district should have access to the same educational resources and opportunities.  My 3-Point Plan for confronting issues with bias and lack of equity includes:

  • Ongoing bias training for adfministrative staff and teachers

  • A review of our current curriculum to identify and eliminate cultural knowledge gaps

  • Encourage retention and recruitment of teachers of color

Creativity in Learning

City Schools of Decatur has the privilege of educating the most advanced and creative minds in the state.  By advocating for our teachers and staff,  we can provide them all of the needed tools to be successful in their classrooms.  Together, we can assess and highlight the needs of individual students in order to help them realize their academic potential.

Quality Driven Search for Our Next Superintendent

Parents and taxpayers in our district deserve a fair and open search for our district’s next leader. As your next School Board member, I plan to actively participate in this selection process, and be a vocal advocate for the needs of our students. My goal is to ensure that the next Superintendent is a candidate of quality with a true commitment to education.  Quality metrics include, but are not limited to:

  • Positive experiences in academic leadership at the district level

  • High-level team management skills

  • A track record of success in leading a diverse school district

Transparency in Leadership

Transparency and communication pitfalls among parents, invested community members, and the school board have led to barriers in problem solving.  As your next School Board member, I plan to discuss budget, curriculum, and policy matters in a clear and concise manner.  An important goal of mine is to initiate open and honest communication between parents and school board members.  Healthy feedback and dialogue from the community is always welcomed.
